Why didn't anyone tell me!? I would have come to work prepared. Apparently I need to brush up on my National Food holidays. That being said, let's talk blueberries...

According to whfoods.com, blueberries are the second most popular berry in the US (Strawberries are #1), they are high in antioxidants, and they are one of the few fruits that are native to North America. FFAnewhorizons.org, states that blueberries are one of the only foods that are naturally blue, they grow best in an acidic soil and make a good container plant, and peak-season runs from mid-June to mid-August. The US Blueberry Council adds that they’re low in fat, having just 80 calories per cup, and they are packed with Vitamin C!

No wonder there's a National Blueberry Pie Day! If you're a little nervous about trying your hand at making a blueberry pie to celebrate, don't be. It's a pretty simple recipe and you can buy the piecrust instead of tackling that as well. Here's a great video to help you out from the folks at allrecipes.

Just an FYI, making a lattice top for the pie is crazy easy, if I can do it so can you! Oh, while the video was playing, I found a site that has a list of all of the National Food Holidays! It's food.com and tomorrow is National Shrimp Scampi Day, I may pass on that one, but I'll be ready for Wednesday, it's National Oatmeal Cookie Day. Happy baking!
