Ever Wanted To Watch a Hudson Valley Painting Be Created?

It is no secret that the Hudson Valley is full of amazing artists. So many of our Hudson Valley communities have art centers and places that feature local artists.

The Hudson Valley is home to the Hudson River School of Art which is responsible for an illuminating body of work by some of the world's best-romanticized landscape artists. Thomas Cole and Frederic Church are just two of the many artists who used the natural settings of our area bathed in natural light to create breathtaking pieces of art.

What is Plein Air Painting

Many area artists paint in a style called Plein Air when they are capturing the landscapes around the Hudson Valley.

Basically, this means that they gather the paints, brushes, canvas, and easels and then head to a place outdoors where they can paint what is in front of them. Capturing a day's landscape as it unfolds.

Being able to watch an artist start from a blank canvas and reveal their process can be very exciting to watch. No matter what the medium it is always stunning to see the painting come to life. The Mohonk Preserve hosts an event each year that lets art fans enjoy that experience.

When is the Mohonk Preserve Plein Air Art Event

Set aside June 8th, 2024 with a rain date of June 9th for this year's Plein Art Event at the Mohonk Preserve. Once again artists will be set up from about 10 AM to 3 PM painting various landscapes that make up the preserve.

Artists will be stationed throughout the preserve. Many will be at Pin Oak Allee. others will be at Lenape Lane plus there will be art stations at the Ridgeview Trails and on part of the Mohonk Preserve Foothills at the loop of the River-to-Ridge Trail. These vantage points allow the artist to view some of Ulster County's most iconic views.

Mohonk Members get into this event for free. For non-members, there is a $15 charge. All the finished works will be available in an online auction once the event is over. The work will be on display at the Mohonk Preserve through the month of June and there will be a closing reception for the artist and online bidders.

What Artists will be included in the Mohonk Preserve's Plein Air Event?

The call for artists is going on now. If you or someone you know wants to be considered for this event you must apply now. It is free to apply. Artists who are selected will be notified by April 30, 2024. There is a minimal cost of $25 to register if you are selected. Roost Arts Hudson Valley is helping with the application process.
