A major grocery chain has announced that it will be permanently closing one of its stores in Ulster County, NY.

Last year, we learned that Tops Friendly Markets was planning to open a new location at 100 Tops Market Blvd. in the Town of Wawarsing, NY, replacing the shuttered ShopRite store that closed in 2024.

The grand opening of the new store happened in June of 2025, and just over a year later, it appears the store will be closing before the end of the year.

Tops Closing Store in Ulster County, NY

After hearing some rumors that the store might be closing, I reached out directly to the Tops customer service center to confirm the closure. They told me that this was a “tough decision” for the company to make, but yes, the Tops Friendly Markets location in Ellenville will be closing its doors on Friday, October 2, at 3 p.m.

And honestly, the timing of this one is a little surprising.

The Ellenville store only opened about a year ago, giving residents another option when it came to picking up groceries, household items, and everything else you typically need from your local supermarket.

Now, just over a year after opening, that location is closing.

The Tops representative also told me that the company wanted to make sure the Ellenville community knows that it appreciates the support it has received from local shoppers and invited folks to shop at one of the company's other locations in Carmel, New Paltz, Lagrangeville, and Rhinebeck, NY.

It's not all bad news, at least for the employees who work at the store.

Tops said its employees won't simply be left without a job when the store closes. According to the company's customer service center, all of the associates working at the Ellenville location have been offered jobs at other Tops stores.

So while the Ellenville location will soon be gone, the company is making an effort to keep those employees within the Tops family. For customers, however, the closure means another change is coming to the local shopping landscape.

The store will remain open until 3 p.m. on Friday, October 2, giving shoppers a little more time to stop in before the doors officially close.
