If you travel to New York City and travel on the trains, the MetroCard could soon be a thing of the past.

The MTA has been exploring new ways for travelers and commuters to use mass transit without a metro card.

According to ABC 7, the MTA is taking suggestions now on how to go about making this happen with a collection type system where riders would just have to tap a smart card or use there smartphone. It most likely will be just like an app that a lot of stores are now using to collect money, stores like Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts and more.

An MTA spokesperson told ABC that once the new system is complete, they will debut it sometime in mid 2018 and after the debut they will start to phase out the metrocard.
