Melissa McCarthy Will Play Tinker Bell in a Movie Which Will Surely Be Magical

Hey, remember that Tinker Bell sketch from ‘SNL’ a while back, when Aidy Bryant played a bawdy version of the beloved Disney fairy? If only we could have a film version of that. Well, prepare for the next best thing. Melissa McCarthy is set to star in a live-action Tinker Bell film from ‘Night at the Museum’ director Shawn Levy and ‘Neighbors’ writer Nicholas Stoller. Magical!

Deadline reports that McCarthy is teaming up with Levy, who most recently helmed the family dramedy ‘This Is Where I Leave You,’ for the new comedy adventure project based on an idea originated by Levy, which he later developed with McCarthy when he brought her on board to star. Nicholas Stoller, who wrote the screenplays for ‘Muppets Most Wanted’ and ‘Neighbors’—one of this year’s most hilarious films—will pen the script, so this thing has definite potential.

What’s not immediately clear based on trade reports is whether or not the film will be live-action or animated, although we’re certainly hoping for the former, particularly after seeing Aidy Bryant’s ‘SNL’ sketch—it would definitely play against the iconography, although it really depends on the script. We’ve seen McCarthy do a lot of physical comedy and poke fun at herself in the past, and it’s a slippery slope. She does the sloppy, frumpy, clumsy thing often, but seeing her play a goofy Disney fairy who subverts expectations could be quite funny.
