Maren Morris Announces New Album, ‘Girl’
Maren Morris has announced her long-awaited second studio album, Girl. The singer-songwriter shared the news on Instagram on Thursday (Feb. 7), posting the provocative cover of the album and sharing the release date.
Girl is set for release on March 8, and according to Morris' post, it will be available for pre-order at midnight on Friday. The daring album cover shows the 28-year-old country and pop singer lying on her back in nature, her fuzzy yellow jacket thrown open to reveal the pink bra she's wearing underneath.
Morris' sophomore project is one most anticipated new albums of 2019. Morris soared to success and critical acclaim with the release of her debut album, Hero, in 2016, and in 2018 she crossed over into pop and scored one of the biggest hits of the year with "The Middle," her collaboration with Zedd and Grey. Morris is the most-nominated country artist at the upcoming 2019 Grammy Awards; she's up for Record, Pop Duo/Group Performance, Country Solo Performance, Country Duo/Group Performance and Country Song of the Year.
Morris released the album's title song as its first single in January. The soul-influenced track is a female empowerment anthem, and she followed up with the release of a powerful video that depicts a cross-section of women in various personal scenes, including Morris attending a women's march.
Morris married country singer Ryan Hurd in 2018, and she says her newfound security has impacted her approach to music.
"Me choosing 'Girl' as the first single, it's about transitioning from someone who felt like she didn't need anybody into someone who very much needs people, and is okay with admitting that," she says in an interview with Billboard. "That really frightening vulnerability that I've been trying to avoid, I'm not doing that any longer."
Morris is set to embark on her Girl: The World Tour in March, with Cassadee Pope and RaeLynn as her support acts.
