The longest-running amusement park in the country is set to open with some amazing upgrades this year.

One of the best things about this time of the year is not only does the weather start to get a lot better but some of our favorite outdoor amusement parks start to open for the season.

One of those parks we are excited to check out this year is about an hour and a half away from most of the Hudson Valley but well worth the drive!

Lake Compounce Opening

The longest continuously operating amusement park in the United States, Lake Compounce located in Bristol, Connecticut has announced they are ready to open for the 2024 season! The park at 185 Enterprise Drive, Bristol, CT will open for the season on Saturday, April 27th, and will have a bunch of updates and improvements throughout the park for guests to enjoy.

Rollercoaster Upgrades

If you didn't know Lake Compounce is home to the "iconic 97-year-old" Wildcat roller coaster, a classic 1927 wooden coaster that has received a bit of an upgrade "The iconic Wildcat roller coaster is back with an all-new track!" according to their website.

The coaster has been "re-tracked with a vertically stacked track" and will give riders a much smoother ride this season than ever before.

Park General Manager Doug Hemphill told NBC Connecticut,

"We are proud to have restored the Wildcat coaster while also maintaining its integrity as an all-wood roller coaster as the ride celebrates nearly 100 years."

Not only has the Wildcat been upgraded but the park's other coaster Boulder Dash, has also been upgraded as they have added over 1,000 feet of steel track to the ride.

Lake Compounce Park Upgrades

The park will offer a new coffee shop this season as they will feature fully caffeinated perfection from the folks at 1846 Coffee Co., located next to Wave Swinger. The park will also be bringing back Kids Fest every weekend in June and the popular Summer Concert Series & Beach Bash featuring live music and DJs throughout July.

We will take a look at 5 amusement parks that no longer exist in the State of Connecticut. They are, in no particular order, Savin Rock Amusement Park in West Haven, Suburban Park in Unionville, Wildwood Park in Dayville, East Lyme's Golden Spur Park, and Roton Point Park located in Rowayton. All, at one time a thriving, well-patronized part of Connecticut's amusement park industry.
