I was one of the many folks this Thanksgiving who were left to the mercy of Mother Nature. Every year we are invited to someone's house for a delicious home cooked meal on Thanksgiving but not this year, this year was the year I was going to cook. Fortunately I had the fore thought not to invited anyone to join my family for dinner because our first winter storm of the season got the better of my plans.

The power went out 3 times Wednesday causing me to delay any culinary chores. The last time it went off it stayed off until 6p on Thursday. The good news I hadn't started any cooking. The bad news I never got to cook. Needless to say I wasn't too happy. I had looked forward to spending the time off cooking my first turkey. My first turkey was the real reason I hadn't invited a crowd and turned out to be the smartest thing I did for the holiday.

Shoveling snow for 4 hours was not fun. And don't even get me started on the disaster that was my husband and I clearing wires around the house of snow and branches. Yes I had a bit of a tantrum. Especially when I found out that our power could be out until Saturday. But eventually my bad attitude gave way to happier thoughts and I realized I had a lot to be thankful for yesterday.

I am thankful to my brother in law who fixed my snow blower this summer and now it runs better than new. I am thankful for all the crews who work non-stop yesterday until mine and my neighbors power came back on. The Central Hudson Outage summary might have been depressing at times but at least it was updated and kept us informed. I am thankful that I had family to share the shoveling. I am thankful that the Stewart's shop in Port Ewen was open, makes great coffee and had apple cider donuts. I am even thankful for my Thanksgiving grill cheese and soup I enjoyed with the family in front of our holiday movie tradition - Christmas Vacation once the power was restored.

Still not sure when I will cook the bird but hey their is always this weekend.
