You may be like me and not afraid to drive in winter weather. However, I am hoping you are also like me and when you do head out into snow conditions you take extra caution.

No matter how equipped your car is for winter driving you just can't take the chance. Driving cautiously and defensively is the best way to deal with winter road conditions. Be prepared for anything to happen.

Something You Shouldn't Do While Driving in the Winter in New York

The New York State Thruway Authority has guidelines that all of us should follow when it comes to driving this winter. One of the most important is when you are driving around snowplows. It is not illegal to pass a snow plow in a legal passing situation but why would you?

I am sure many of us can attest to the fact that we saw some bad driving during the last few weeks in the Hudson Valley. Slippy roads don't care how skilled you are as a driver or if you have four-wheel drive. These two things help but that doesn't mean you can drive like the roads aren't bad.

VIDEO: Car Plows into New York State Snow Plow

A New York State Snow Plow caught this drive making a deadly mistake on camera. Luckily no one was killed but let's face it this was a dumb and reckless move by the motorist. It is hard to tell from this video if it was a legal passing area but if nothing else this has to be a perfect example of reckless driving.

The New York State Thruway Authority Has More Tips for Winter Driving

After last week's cold snap, it is a good idea to double-check your supplies. Keeping the gas tank full is a must. Having the snow brush and scraper handy is important. Plus you should make sure when you leave the house you are dressed for the weather or at least have those clothes in the car.

I am also a fan of traveling with water and snacks. I don't suggest you leave them in there however, the water will freeze and the snacks can attract mice. Keep the outdoor air vents closed when your car is parked, this will hopefully prevent one of the ways mice can get in your car.
