A Hudson Valley man was killed by a train while trying to save his dog.

On Tuesday just past 8 p.m, Port Jervis City police responded to a report of a man who was hit by a commuter train in the vicinity of Jersey Avenue near the intersection with Pennsylvania Avenue.

Late Tuesday, police only said a 53-year-old Port Jervis man was fatally struck by a westbound commuter train. Late Wednesday, Port Jervis police identified the man and gave more information.

John Erick Evans, 53, of Port Jervis was fatally struck by a Metro-North commuter train that was traveling west in the City of Port Jervis, behind the area of Family Dollar located on Jersey Avenue, police say.

Authorities believe Evans was chasing after his pet dog, who was running near the train tracks when he was accidentally hit by the oncoming train.

The incident is still under investigation by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority Police and City of Port Jervis Police Department.
