They wrote on Facebook: "Current situation! The water rose from 0 to 8ft in 45 minutes then exploded out of Winding Way! "

Howe Caverns explained that they manage water levels by opening their mechanical dam. They also add that "Ground saturation is always a factor for cave flooding" and that it's not always heavy rain that affects the water level.

They write "For example, if it has been exceptionally dry and the ground is dry, heavy steady rains will not affect the cave. However, if it has been very rainy and the ground is already saturated, heavy rains will affect the water levels in the cave.

Thankfully Howe Caverns monitors the levels in the cave all day long in person and by camera and if the cave floods they share that the water recedes within 24 hours.
