Dutchess County Deputies Spring Into Action to Save Injured Owl

Injured Owl Rescued in Dutchess County

While Dutchess County Sheriff's Deputy's were on ATV patrol they received a unique call.

Deputy DiGiovanni and Deputy Stroka were on patrol on the Dutchess Rail Trail when they were "notified of an injured barred owl along the trail." Not every call involves humans.

In a statement shared to social media the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office writes:

Our summer ATV Patrol Detail is committed to keeping our parks and trails safe, not only for the people who enjoy them, but for the wildlife that calls them home as well.

When the Deputies found the injured owl they determined "it needed specialized care."

Rescued Dutchess County Owl Receives Specialized Care

After finding the injured owl, Deputies DiGiovanni and Stroka reached out to a wildlife rehabilitation specialist.

The owl will remain under the rehabilitator’s care for approximately 72 hours before being transferred to Green Chimneys Farm and Wildlife Center for continued treatment and recovery.

As of July 9th, 2026, Green Chimneys Farm hasn't shared an update regarding the owl. We'll make sure to update this story when we learn more.

Orange County EMS Rescues Injured Owl

The Dutchess County owl rescue was the second owl rescue recently in the area.

Back at the end of June, Goshen EMS made a rescue of the owl variety. The Goshen EMS Chief, who happens to be a bird enthusiast, was in the right place at the right time.

According to a post on Facebook Goshen EMS explained that an injured owl was spotted outside of an Orange County Government building.

Chief Eagleston "who has some exotic bird experience" knew to throw a blanket over the owl and then transported it to the vet "where the rehabilitator would eventually retrieve the injured owl after it received the care needed."
