Have you heard about a routine that is saving many New Yorkers from future headaches?

Most of us are well aware that thieves are always lurking right around the corner waiting for us to slip up and either forget to lock our doors or leave something valuable in our cars so they can swoop in and steal from us. If you've ever made the mistake of leaving your wallet, computer, phone, or anything of value in your car and then had it stolen from you probably felt a little embarrassed after it happened.

Taking a few steps daily could prevent you from ever feeling that way again!

9 P.M. Routine in New York

The 9 p.m. routine is something that was introduced nationwide a few years ago by the folks at the doorbell video company Ring as well as numerous law enforcement agencies across the country. Since it started it has prevented thousands from having their vehicles and valuables stolen. The routine is really easy to follow and only requires everyone to take a few simple steps before they go to bed each night in hopes of deterring thieves. To begin the 9 p.m. routine at your house it is recommended that you set an alarm on your phone or smart device for 9.pm.and once it's activated you should go through the following routine:

  • Remove valuables from your vehicle
  • Lock your vehicle
  • Make sure your mailbox is empty and no packages are left outside
  • If you have a garage, make sure the garage doors are closed and locked
  • Turn on the outside lights
  • Lock all ground-floor doors and windows

Following these simple steps will by no means eliminate cars from being stolen or broken into but because criminals look for easy targets you can make it more difficult for them by following the 9 P.M. routine. Criminals will oftentimes walk through neighborhoods trying vehicle and front door handles hoping to find them unlocked and when it's locked they will move on to the next vehicle or house.

It's also a great idea for everyone to share the routine with neighbors so that the entire neighborhood is safer.
