New York Knicks Celebrate Their First Championship in 50+ Years

For the first time in more than 50 years, New Yorkers finally have a reason to celebrate an NBA championship.

After defeating the San Antonio Spurs in five games to win the NBA Finals, the New York Knicks have captured their first NBA title since 1973, ending a championship drought that spanned generations of fans.

Parade to Celebrate the New York Knicks

Following the Knicks' championship-clinching victory, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced that the city will host a massive ticker-tape parade and City Hall celebration on Thursday, June 18, to honor the team and its historic achievement.

According to the mayor's office, the celebration will include a ticker-tape parade through the Canyon of Heroes in Manhattan, followed by a ceremony at City Hall where members of the championship team will be honored and awarded Keys to the City.

The event will mark the first ticker-tape parade in Knicks franchise history and is expected to draw millions of fans from across New York and beyond.

"For more than 50 years, New Yorkers have waited for this moment," Mayor Mamdani said. "Through near misses, heartbreak and a hope that every year could be our year, this city never stopped believing in the Knicks. And this team fulfilled that hope with grit, resilience and heart — just like the five boroughs itself."

The mayor also highlighted how fans across the city rallied behind the team throughout its championship run.

"New Yorkers have cheered for our team from packed living rooms in the Bronx to watch parties in Brooklyn, from bars in Queens to Staten Island to Manhattan, and Madison Square Garden itself. Now it's time for our city to celebrate together. Bing bong."

Parade Details

The parade is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. EDT on Thursday, June 18, near Battery Park in Lower Manhattan.

The parade will travel north along Broadway through the historic Canyon of Heroes, the traditional route used for some of New York City's most memorable championship celebrations. The parade will conclude at City Hall, where Mayor Mamdani will host a special ceremony honoring the team and presenting players, coaches, and organization officials with Keys to the City.

New York Turns Blue & Orange

In addition to the parade and City Hall ceremony, City Hall and numerous municipal buildings throughout New York City will be illuminated in the Knicks' signature blue and orange colors on Thursday night.

Among the buildings scheduled to be lit up are City Hall, the David N. Dinkins Manhattan Municipal Building, and Brooklyn Borough Hall.

For Knicks fans, it's a celebration more than five decades in the making. The franchise's last NBA championship came in 1973, and generations of fans have waited through countless playoff disappointments hoping to see another title brought home to New York.

Now, after one unforgettable postseason run and comeback after comeback, New York is preparing for what could be one of the largest sports celebrations in New York history.
