
New York State Highway Worker Killed in Work Zone Crash
A 22-year veteran of the New York State Department of Transportation has been tragically killed in a work zone crash in Pittstown, New York.
The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) is mourning the loss of a highway maintenance supervisor who passed away Friday, May 30th, 2025, after suffering catastrophic injuries related to a work zone crash.
Highway Worker Killed in Upstate New York
According to the NYSDOT, Highway Maintenance Supervisor Robert Bornt passed away after suffering catastrophic injuries related to a work zone crash in a flagging operation in Pittstown, NY. The DOT made the sad announcement on Facebook, saying,
"It is with heavy hearts that we share the tragic loss of NYSDOT Highway Maintenance Supervisor Robert Bornt, who passed away this morning after suffering from catastrophic injuries related to a work zone crash in a flagging operation in Pittstown yesterday afternoon."
The DOT didn't share details regarding the tragic accident but did say in a statement that he was a proud and dedicated member of the NYSDOT family. The statement said, "Like so many of our highway workers, he was out there doing critical work to keep New York’s roads safe."
New York Work Zone Crash Claims Life
NYSDOT Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez released a statement saying Robert Bornt was a hardworking, dedicated, and beloved 22-year veteran of the New York State Department of Transportation.
"Collectively, we mourn his loss and will forever keep Robert and his family in our prayers," said Dominguez. "The safety and well-being of our employees is my primary focus as Commissioner."
Work Zone Awareness in New York
Sadly, work zone accidents have become a major problem on New York roads, with numerous accidents reported across the state every month. Thankfully, law enforcement agencies have begun increasing patrols in work zones and ticketing drivers who don't follow the speed limit or move over when necessary.

DOT Commissioner Dominguez vowed to continue to fight for highway worker safety, saying,
"The fight for their safety is my most important fight, and I will continue to raise awareness every day on the importance of drivers to slow down, pay attention, and move over in highway work zones."
