Esopus Fire Department Responses to Two Emergencies at Once

Once again one of the many fire departments we have in the Hudson Valley was out making a difference in our community. The Esopus Fire Department handled two calls on Wednesday at the same time.

Like most fire companies in the Hudson Valley, The Esopus Fire Department is looking for volunteers. You can't have enough people ready to jump in and lend a helping hand during a tragedy. Yesterday's fire and Water rescue are a perfect example.

Even in the smallest town, it is possible for a Fire Department to get placed on 2 calls. This just happened to the Esopus Fire Department earlier this week. And like many towns and villages emergencies can involve property on land and water.

On Wednesday, August 28th at 2:18 PM the Esopus Fire Department was dispatched along with the Port Ewen Fire Department to smoke at the rear of a building at 86 Ulster Avenue in Ulster Park. When they arrived they reported light smoke coming from a window.

They were on the scene inside of 4 minutes and just in time to get the fire under control. The fire is under investigation and during the blaze, it appears pets were injured. Sadly, one cat was found deceased, and another was administered oxygen from a pet oxygen mask.

While they were on the fire call the Esopus Fire Department firefighters were also called on to help a boat in distress on the Hudson River near the Esopus Lighthouse. In that emergency, both occupants of the boat were safely transported to shore from a disabled vessel.

According to the press release, all units were able to clear the fire scene in about 3 hours. Units and agencies that also responded are listed below.

Firefighters were assisted by the Port Ewen Fire Dept, St. Remy Fire Dept, Highland Hose Company, Kingston Fire Dept, Ulster Hose Company #5, Roosevelt Fire Department, City of Poughkeepsie Fire, Ulster County Fire Coordinators Office, Ulster County Emergency Management, NYS Office of Emergency Management, Town of Esopus Volunteer Ambulance Squad, Central Hudson Gas and Electric, Town of Esopus Building Department and the Ulster County Fire Investigation Unit.
