There may be some confusion in the Village of New Paltz this week if you are trying to use Water Street as a way to get around going through town.

The Day Has Finally Come To Tear Down the Old Drum Factory on Water Street

One of the favorite traffic workarounds for people heading in and out of the Village of  New Paltz will not be open to traffic from 7 A to 3:30 PM from today through the end of the month which happens to be Friday. A portion of Water Street is closed to regular traffic during the day this week.

It is important to note that this is only a portion of Water Street. I reached out to businesses that are located on Water Street and have been told the detour does not include them. Water Street Market and The Weedery are open and you still have access to their parking lots for shopping.

The road has been closed in front of the old barn so that the demolition which has been promised for years can take place. It seems that the time has finally come to take down the old structure and get the lot ready for its next opportunity.

Businesses on Water Street in New Paltz Are Open During Road Closure

Many people who live in New Paltz are aware that the property on Water Street that was originally part of the old lumber yard that was torn down decades ago to make way for Water Street Market has been scheduled for an upgrade. According to Ulster Strong's Facebook Page, it is time to move on to the next step of a project that has been discussed for years.

According to Ulster Strong on February 19th, 2025, the Ulster County IDA Board unanimously approved incentives for a boutique hotel to open at 11 Water Street. The plan is to have the hotel blend into the scenery which includes the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail. The rendering of the new hotel is below courtesy of Hoover Architecture.
