Bedford, New York Animal Rescue Founder Arrested on Cruelty Charges

A Bedford, New York woman is under arrest after a months long investigation regarding animal cruelty at her animal rescue and dog kennel.

4 Puppies Denied Proper Medical Care at NY Rescue

SPCA Westchester explains that back on October 3rd, 2023 officials were alerted to a situation where several witnesses saw "4 sick Bernese Mountain Dog puppies who were being denied proper medical care at Rescue Right in Northwind Kennels, located in Bedford, NY."

The next day SPCA Westchester's Humane Law Enforcement Director as well as the Medical Director, a Staff Vet tech and NYS Health Department Official visited the location.

During the inspection the officials discovered "all 4 puppies and their mom, Annabelle, were suffering and in critical condition." Westchester SPCA wrote on social media that one of the puppies "could barely breathe and was nonresponsive."

The post goes on to explain that the puppies and Annabelle were rushed to a private veterinary hospital. On arrival, one of the puppies was "humanely euthanized" because it was so sick.

Sadly, after six days of around the clock care, the remaining puppies and Annabelle were "euthanized to prevent further suffering."

Bedford, New York Animal Rescue Founder Arrested

SPCA Westchester announced on social media on July 18th, 2024 that there has been an update to the investigation.

According to SPCA Westchester Penny Berk who is the Founder of Rescue Right and the Owner of Northwind Kennels in Bedford, NY where the dogs were found, was arrested for Animal Cruelty.

Berk was charged with 5 counts of animal cruelty and will appear in court on August 28th, 2024.

Abandoned Westchester Dog Security Video Goes Viral

This isn't the first time SPCA Westchester has been making headlines over the last few months.

Back in June of 2024, SPCA Westchester shared a post on social media of a women in the New Rochelle area doing the unthinkable. The woman was caught on camera pulling up in her car to a random street, opening her car door and leaving a young dog abandoned in the middle of the road.

SPCA Westchester was hoping that someone would come forward with information about the woman. The post blew up on social media and within day, the woman was identified as Marissa Levy.

The Humane Law Enforcement Unit and the New Rochelle Police Department arrested Levy and charged her with animal abandonment.
