It’s not every day you hear about someone trying to make off with an entire ATM, but that’s exactly what authorities say happened earlier this week in Upstate New York.

Man Tries to Steal ATM from Laundromat in Upstate New York

According to Washington County Sheriff Jeffrey J. Murphy, it started when deputies were called out to a business on Main Street in the Village of Whitehall, NY, in the early morning hours of April 10th.

Murphy stated that a call came in at approximately 2:17 a.m., reporting that an ATM had been stolen from a local laundromat in Washington County, NY.

When deputies arrived on the scene, they didn’t have to look far to find who was responsible.

Police said they found 43-year-old Jeremy M. Ross, of Mountain Street in Whitehall, NY, standing near the damaged ATM machine outside of the business, and began an investigation.

Caught on Video

Investigators started by reviewing surveillance footage from inside the laundromat, which allegedly showed Ross dragging the ATM machine out of the building. But it didn’t stop there.

Officials say he was also caught on multiple cameras damaging additional pieces of surveillance equipment inside, seemingly trying to cover his tracks.

That effort, however, didn’t appear to go very far.

Arrested and Charged

Ross was arrested and charged with grand larceny and criminal mischief, both felonies. Following his arrest, Ross was arraigned through "Centralized Arraignment" and later released.

He is expected to appear in the Village of Whitehall Court at a later date to answer the charges.
