Historic Westchester Landmark Vandalized

On Saturday, May 30th 2025, a Westchester County Park employee arrived to the historic Tarrytown Lighthouse to see the inside turned upside down.

The parks employee reported smoke conditions, window broken and several antiques destroyed.

After photos of the destruction were posted, the Westchester County Police Department shared on social media that they were investigating an "arson fire and vandalism spree."

On Facebook, the Westchester County Police explain that the Sleepy Hollow Police and Fire Departments were called out to the scene to assist in putting out as small fire, and that the case was turned over to the General Investigations Unit.

What Was Damaged at The Tarrytown Lighthouse?

Photos of the damage to the Tarrytown Lighthouse began being shared by thousands across New York State. Many were confused as to why anyone would want to destroy a registered National Historic Place.

There was "significant fire damage" to the first floor, broken windows and valuable antiques were destroyed including furniture and other items of "historical significance."

35 antique books that were thrown about the floor as well.

Authorities asked the public with any information to come forward through their tip line. Now, a few days later, it looks like they may have a lead.

On Tuesday, June 3rd the Westchester County Police Department shared 4 black and white photos looked to have been taken with a security camera.
