A West Point Cadet was one of the 9 soldiers who died in Texas flood waters.

Cadet Mitchell Alexander Winey, a member of the Class of 2018, B Company, First Regiment at Army, was in Fort Hood, Texas participating in Cadet Troop Leader training. He and 8 other soldiers were killed Thursday when their tactical vehicle overturned at a low water crossing at a creek on the Central Texas Army base.

The 21-year-old from Valparaiso, Indiana deiced in the eighth grade he wanted to attend West Point. . His father tells the Chicago Tribune in high school Winey was a varsity athlete, prom king, and class president.

Lieutenant General Robert L. Caslen, Jr., the Superintendent of the United States Military Academy, called Winey a rising leader and a friend to everyone who knew him.

“Throughout his time here at the U.S. Military Academy, Cadet Winey was enormously proud to be a cadet. Mitchell was an exemplary cadet in academics, as an Engineering Management major, during company athletics, and as a member of the Ski Patrol,” Caslen said in a statement. “He internalized the ideals and values of West Point and exemplified them in all that he set out to do. Duty, Honor, Country were his touchstones.”
