Every month I try to focus on a fresh fruit or vegetable that is available from a local market or farmer. In November there aren't a lot of local options in New York, however in our neighboring states of New Jersey and Massachusetts this is Cranberry season. Harvested just in time for Thanksgiving this is the time of year to by fresh cranberries and make your own cranberry treats.

Cranberries are one of the native fruits of the United States. Many fruits were imported to the USA but not cranberries. They are native to our homeland and were vital to the Native American diet which might be why they ended up as a Thanksgiving tradition. They are also a super food thought to have many properties to aid in keeping us healthy.

When you sit down at the Thanksgiving dinner table this year consider eating more cranberry. Even if it is jellied kind shaped like the can that is sweetened beyond recognition. It will still most likely be the healthiest choice on the table.
