You've heard it before, especially if you're a teenager, you can't get a job unless you have experience, but you can't get experience unless you get a job. Ulster County has a summer youth employment program that can really help.

Ulster County Executive Mike Hein announced this week that Ulster County has received $244,631.00 from New York State for Ulster County’s Summer Youth Employment Program. This program takes Ulster County residents ranging in age from 14-20 and provides them with the opportunity to gain valuable work experience while earning a paycheck in Ulster County over the summer.

This summer’s program has also more work sites, with a record high of 81 private and public businesses participating throughout Ulster County. The city of Kingston and the towns of Hurley, Esopus, Rosendale, Saugerties, New Paltz, Plattekill, Ellenville, Rochester, Marbletown, Lloyd, Woodstock, Olive, Shandaken, Gardiner and Wallkill will all have participating venues.

All worksites pay $9.00 an hour to program participants, and all participants are required to complete an interview and orientation before starting the 5 week program on July 6th. This year, Ulster County is expecting between 130-150 youth to participate in the program, overseen by the Ulster County Office of Employment and Training and the Workforce Investment Board.

Applications for the program are available at the following locations: UlsterWorks One Stop Center, 651 Development Court, Kingston; all Ulster County high school guidance offices; and online at UlsterWorks.com. The application deadline has been extended to May 22, 2015.
