Search Continues for Fisherman Who Fell Into New York River
First responders continue to search for a fisherman who fell from a wall into the river to recover his fishing pole.
One of the most popular activities for folks who enjoy the outdoors this time of year across New York is fishing. Many New York waterways are stocked full of various types of fish and oftentimes people who like to fish will often do it either from a boat, the banks of a waterway, or from a dock or wall.
Fishing in New York
If you or someone you know enjoys fishing in New York you are well aware that there are moments while fishing that can be dangerous especially when someone is fishing off a wall or dock. Oftentimes a fisherman can lose their balance and fall into the water while fishing, similar to what happened on the Mohawk River Thursday morning.
Fishing Accident on Mohawk River
According to the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office (MCSO), a fisherman fell from a wall into the Mohawk River on Thursday morning as he was trying to recover his fishing pole. County Sherriff Jeff Smith told News 10 that the incident happened around 11 a.m. Thursday when a 31-year-old fisherman's line got snagged on something in the water causing his fishing pole to fall into the river.
The man then reportedly went into the river to save his pole and couldn't get back out. A nearby person did attempt to save the man from the water before first responders arrived on the scene but was unsuccessful.

Numerous area agencies responded to the scene to assist in searching the river for the man including MCSO Deputies, Tribes Hill, and Florida Fire as well as the New York State Forest Rangers. At this time the man still has yet to be located.
Rough Waters
According to Montgomery County Sheriff Jeff Smith the 149-mile-long Mohawk River's rough waters, which get up to 12 to 15 feet deep have made the search incredibly difficult. Smith likened the river's currents to that of a "washing machine."
