Ritz Crackers Recalled

Mondelēz Global LLC, the company that manufactures Ritz brand crackers, issued a recall of specific sizes of its Ritz Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwiches according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration website.

The recall posted on Tuesday, July 8th, stated that four carton sizes of the individually wrapped packs of Ritz Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwiches have been recalled after a labeling error mistakenly identifies the packs as containing cheese filling, even though the product may contain a peanut butter filling.

The recall affects 8-pack, 20-pack, and 40-pack cartons of the Ritz Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwiches, as well as the 20-pack Ritz Filled Cracker Sandwich Variety Pack carton, all of which were manufactured in the United States and sold nationwide.

According to the recall, the larger, outer cartons that contain the individually wrapped packs are labeled correctly, identifying the correct peanut butter sandwiches, as well as an allergen warning.

The individually wrapped packs inside the carton may not carry the correct information, which could lead to life-threatening allergic reactions to any person who has an allergy or severe sensitivity to peanuts if they consume the product.

How Did This Happen?

Mondelēz Global LLC said that it discovered the error after film packaging rolls used to package individually wrapped products containing peanut butter contained defects due to a "supplier error". The company stated that "corrective actions are being taken to help ensure this issue does not recur."

If you find that you have the recalled products and have a peanut allergy, the FDA says to avoid eating the affected cracker sandwiches and to discard them.

Mondelēz Global LLC also states that there have been no reports of injury or illness reported to them due to the labeling error, but they issued the recall as a precaution.
