Tomorrow (Saturday November 2nd) The American Red Cross of the Mid-Hudson Valley will be holding a very important event in the City of Poughkeepsie. They have teamed up with the City of Poughkeepsie and Raymour & Flanigan Furniture and Mattress Store for Sound the Alarm a home safety campaign. Their goal is to make homes safer for local families.

Their mission is to head out for the day with volunteers and partners to visit homes around the City of Poughkeepsie installing free smoke alarms. They will also be educating families about fire safety. According to a statistic they shared home fires claim seven lives a day in the U.S. and this is most often in homes without working smoke alarms.

This event is part of the Red Cross Home Fire Campaign which started in 2014 and according to the Red Cross has reached more than 2 million people and saved at least 638 lives nationwide. They also shared that Red Cross volunteers and partners have installed nearly 25,000 free smoke alarms and are credited with saving 19 lives locally, 7 of which were in Dutchess County over the past 5 years.

The event tomorrow in Poughkeepsie tomorrow is from 9 AM to 2 PM. If you are a Poughkeepsie resident you can sign up to receive a visit from a Sound the Alarm team by either calling (845) 249-4228 or by going online to soundthealarm.org/eny.
