Poughkeepsie Galleria Hosting Abilities First Showcase
For a third year the Poughkeepsie Galleria will be the site of the Abilities First Showcase of Resources for Enrichment & Inclusion. On Saturday March 9th from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm all throughout the lower level of the Galleria this free event will provide information on support for individuals with disabilities. These disabilities include developmental, intellectual, physical, mental and others as well. During this event attendees can find out more about resources, unique services and products that can help meet the everyday needs and interested of families, individuals and caregivers for those with disabilities.
In addition to the regular hours they are also offering a time frame for those in need of a sensory-sensitive environment. An early opening from 9:30 am to 10:00 am is available before the Poughkeepsie Galleria officially opens. Along with the showcase the Regal movie theater at the mall will be offering a sensory sensitive event as well. You can enjoy a movie experience with lower sound and brighter lights. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World and Captain Marve lwill be available for viewing at the theater on the lower level.
Additional activities will include performances, demonstrations, meet-and-greets along with other special events such as the 3rd Annual Showcase Flash Mob, which will feature students and faculty from Abilities First schools. That event is planned for 12:30 pm. Hudson Valley Parent Magazine will be on hand photographing children for upcoming covers of the magazine as part of the MY Abilities are Super 2019 Cover Kid Search. Abilities First, Inc. was founded in 1962. It is a not-for-profit organization that serves the needs of those with developmental disabilities from preschool through adulthood. In the Hudson Valley they are currently serving over 1500 children and adults. Their mission is to provide people with disabilities and their families support to attain independence, self-determination, integration and acceptance by others through education, exploration and experience.
The Poughkeepsie Galleria at 2001 South Road in Poughkeepsie is Dutchess County's Largest, most dominant shopping destination for over 30 years. Anchor stores include Macy's, Target, Best Buy, Sears, JcPenney and Dick's Sporting Goods. They also offer 120 retail shops and the Regal Cinemas.
