This is not to say that dogs that are bred don't have value but never underestimate a shelter dog and what they can accomplish. It feels like they try harder because they have something to give and want to prove it.

I don't know if that was the case with Walter, the shelter Shepard Border Collie mix that ended up being a member of the Orange County Sheriff's Office K9 crew but his career was remarkable. Sadly, Walter who had retired this time last year passed over the rainbow bridge when he was 9.

On Monday the Orange County Sheriff's Office honored Walter and his service. His story begins with him being rescued from a shelter which led to him being trained in ignitable liquid detection.

Walter served from March of 2017 until last March, 7 years alongside Sgt. Justin Worden. Their bond was unbreakable and Walter spent his retirement with Sgt. Worden and his family. Walter was more than a partner he was family and a loyal companion.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office also recognized Deputy Commissioner Vini Tankasali and other members of the Orange County Fire Service for helping Walter become the Orange County Sheriff's first Arson K-9. Walter and his partner Sgt Worden touched countless lives with their dedication and courage.
