Earlier this week, we told you how the New York State Police targeted a stretch of the Taconic State Parkway with Operation Hard Hat, attempting to crack down on dangerous driving in work zones, protect roadway workers, and keep all motorists safe.
Over a 4-hour span on Wednesday, August 13th, 2025, the NYSP issued drivers 76 citations, including 32 for speeding, 8 for cell phone use, 2 for Move Over law violations, and other traffic offenses. The week before that, they issued even more citations to drivers in both Rockland and Westchester County.
Operation Hard Hat Targets More New York Highways
Operation Hard Hat is an ongoing effort by the NYSP and the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) to enhance safety in work zones along all New York highways. To do so, oftentimes troopers will disguise themselves as construction workers to observe drivers who violate traffic laws while driving through a work zone, focusing on speeding and distracted driving.
The first detail happened on Thursday, August 7th, 2025, in an active work zone on a portion of I-87 in Sloatsburg, NY. The operation resulted in Troopers issuing 100 total tickets to drivers, including 87 for speeding.
