Operation Hard Hat is an initiative by the NYSP and the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) to enhance safety in work zones along all New York highways. In some cases, it will involve troopers dressing as construction workers to observe drivers who violate traffic laws while driving through a work zone. Oftentimes, they focus on speeding and distracted driving in an effort to protect highway workers, emergency responders, and motorists.
