New Signs in Kingston Have People Asking: Who Forgot Spell Check?
New signs recently put up in the City of Kingston have plenty of people wondering what happened to spell check.
Over the last few weeks, residents in Kingston have started noticing new signs popping up across the city, designed to let people know exactly where they are. The only problem? Someone forgot to spell-check an important word.
New Signs in Kingston Have a "Typo"
No, you aren’t mis-seeing the picture above, which was shared with us by Kingston mayoral candidate Scott Denny. As you can see, the sign, which is located near the intersection of Flatbush Avenue and East Chester Street, clearly leaves out the “L” in spelling Ulster.
We spoke with Denny about the error, and he said he was at a loss as to how something like this could happen, pointing out that a sign company based in Kingston likely wouldn’t have misspelled the county they operate in.
It’s also a subtle jab at the city’s decision to contract the half-a-million-dollar project out to Forge Signworks, LLC, a company based in New Jersey, instead of using a local business.

The sign pictured above isn’t the only one with an issue. According to the Daily Freeman, another sign on Broadway near West O’Reilly Street that directs motorists to the Kingston Center of SUNY Ulster, also misspells Ulster, again leaving out the “L.”
Who Will Fix the Error?
The City of Kingston’s Director of Communications and Community Development, Summer Smith, told the Freeman the misspellings were “an unfortunate typo,” and that the sign company is expected to fix the issue.
“The sign company will be removing the signs and replacing them with corrections at their own expense,” Smith said.
The misspelled signs are just a few of the nearly 40 new signs being installed at entry points across Kingston. Once completed, the signs will be placed throughout various neighborhoods and will highlight points of interest, shopping districts, museums, and parking.
