New Roundabout Proposed at a Popular Dutchess County Intersection
A new project would replace the traffic lights with a single lane roundabout at a busy Dutchess County, NY intersection.
Most Hudson Valley drivers are well aware that the roundabout (traffic circle) is becoming a very popular option for area highway departments that are looking to upgrade traffic and safety conditions on roads in their neighborhoods. For as long as I can remember, I was always one of those drivers who thought roundabouts were an awful idea. That all changed after a new roundabout was installed near my house, which completely made travel much easier and quicker in my neighborhood.
I understand that not everyone is a fan and that most large truck drivers hate roundabouts because they are almost impossible to navigate, so they might not be happy to hear officials are proposing an intersection in the Town of East Fishkill, NY, along with some other roadway upgrades.
Major Roadway Improvements in Hopewell Junction, New York
According to the New York State Department of Transportation, plans for major roadway improvements have been submitted that would significantly change a popular stretch of road in Hopewell Junction. If approved, the "Route 82 Project" would remove the bridge crossing that currently carries Route 82 over the Metro-North Railroad Line in Hopewell Junction in the Town of East Fishkill, NY.
The bridge would be replaced with an at-grade crossing of Route 82 with the Metro-North Railroad service track to the Hopewell Yard, which would bring the roadway and the railroad tracks to the same level. The project would also add a pedestrian culvert that would reroute pedestrian traffic from the Empire State Trail to follow under Route 82 north of where the existing bridge is currently located.

The project, which was presented to town officials and community members at a recent East Fishkill Town meeting, also stated that it will replace the traffic light-controlled intersection of Route 82 and Beekman Road with a single lane roundabout to improve safety and operations.
