Thanksgiving is three weeks away and that means pie season is in full swing. Ever since the weather turned chilly the go to dessert in my house has been apple anything. Apple pie, apple crisp, even homemade cooked apples as a topping on ice cream. There is nothing like the smell of warm apples and cinnamon on a cold fall day.

So when you are setting out to make one of these yummy dishes how do you decide what apples you'll use? It can be confusing so why not find out more about apples from two Hudson Valley businesses that have a lot of knowledge about apples. On November 16th you can attend the Apple Variety Showcase hosted by Kettleborough Cider House and Dressel Farms.

If you didn't know there are more than 2,500 apple varieties grown in the United States and lets face it most of us only know about a few. So Kettleborough and Dressel are inviting you to join them from 6 PM to 8 PM at Kettleborough Cider House located at 277 Route 208 in New Paltz for an apple education.

The event will included an apple show and tell plus tastes. They will showcase the 40 varieties grown at Kettleborough and Dressel Farms. Photos, descriptions, histories of the apples and more will help you gain knowledge about Hudson Valley apples plus you will get to try modern, heirloom and hard cider varieties.

Your hosts will be Tim Dressel and Sarah Dressel-Nikles, the 4th generation of Dressel Farms, who will answer all your apple questions. Light refreshments (beyond apple samples) will be included. There will also be a cash bar for hard cider throughout the event. Tickets: $12 in advance; $15 at the door (if available)
