My Almost Rattlesnake Encounter
This hike definitely kept me on my toes.
If you listen to the show, you'll know I enjoying hiking every now and then. I did just that this weekend and I took on a new trail that I've never done.
It was a beautiful afternoon on Friday and I didn't want it to go to waste. So I got one of my friends and we headed up to Overlook Mountain in Woodstock. All I really knew about it was it had an abandoned hotel on the top, plus some awesome views.
What I didn't realize, or maybe looked over, was that Overlook Mountain is also Timber Rattlesnake habitat area.
I am NOT a snake fan and truly I don't think anyone would be thrilled to see a rattlesnake. And listen, I fully understand that New York is home to some venomous snakes, but I just didn't think I'd be setting myself up for an encounter on a random Friday.
Luckily, there were no rattlesnakes visible to me on the hike. Thank god. But I've never been more vigilant on a hike.
The view from the fire tower was worth it though:
I've never had a big snake encounter in the Hudson Valley, but I know a lot of other people have. What did you see? Tell us your snake story on FB and let us know how you handled it.
