All my adult life I have heard people talk about the New York Renaissance Faire. Growing up in Orange County most of my life it is no surprise that I had heard of this annual fall event where you could travel back in time to the glorious days of jousting and kings and Queens. But for some reason it never ended up in my travel plans until just last week. Why did it finally hit the calendar? Let's just say it was the famous turkey leg.

You see along with the stories of all the fun and costumes that the NYRF has to offer I had also heard about the famous "Turkey Leg". Everyone I knew who ever went would share their stories about the out of this world costumes or the vendors that could sell you anything medieval. Some would say the jousting was the best, but others were taken in by the atmosphere set in the magical back drop of Sterling Forest. But the one thing everyone single person would say was "and you have to eat the turkey leg". It was as if the turkey leg made the event.

Well I am here to tell you that I finally made it to Sterling Forest and yes the turkey leg is amazing. I definitely enjoyed every bite, but what stole the show for me was the Frozen Apple Cider. Yes the Jousting was exciting and the costumes (be them on the staff or the patrons) were mesmerizing, but it was the sweet, frozen cup of spiced apple cider that made me feel like a had left reality at the gate. Who would have ever thought apple cider could taste so good.

If you plan to go this weekend it is "Time Traveler Weekend" and they are open on Monday for Labor Day. Take their advice - come early and plan to spend the day. It is fun for the family but adults can find plenty of ways to act like a kid. No worries what you wear, it is hard to be fashion challenged in a place were some many wear so much. Whatever you do don't leave without a eating a turkey leg and be sure to wash it down with Frozen apple cider.
