An Orange County Middle School is setting the record straight after a scary moment that occurred during the school day on Wednesday May 28th, 2025.

Middle School Students Fall Ill After Ingesting Gummy Substance

In a press release shared on social media, Principal Dominick Radogna of Monhagen Middle School in the Middletown Central School District wanted to "address an incident" that occurred on school grounds.

In the statement Principal Radogna explains 4 students consumed a "gummy-like substance" and 3 of those students then became ill.

Radogna goes on to add that the families were notified and as a precaution the students were taken to the hospital for further evaluation.

Monhagen Middle School Clears Up Rumors Regarding Gummy Situation

As the situation unfolded at Mohagen Middle School details about the incident became blurry through word of mouth.

With that being said Principal Radogna wanted to set the record straight. According to the press release there a rumor started to circulate that the substance was laced with fentanyl. Radogna writes "At this time, we have no evidence to support these claims, and the exact nature of the substance is still under investigation. "

They also address that the school was not placed in a lockdown or hold-in-place. The statement explains that there was "no evidence of a broader threat to the school community."

The statement concludes by stressing the importance of sharing accurate information.  Principal Radogna states:

 Posting unverified claims, such as confirming the contents of the gummy without direct knowledge, can cause unnecessary concern and confusion.

If future events like this occur families are encouraged to contact the school directly with their questions.

Student Saved by NARCAN in Upstate, NY

The incident at Monhagen Middle School comes off the heels of an Upstate, New York student being saved by NARCAN.

A student at Tompkins-Seneca-Tioga BOCES in Tompkins County, New York inhaled what they believed to be a marijuana vape. The student inhaled and shortly after collapsed.

Life-saving care was provided with multiple doses of NARCAN.

Later, it was discovered that the vape was laced with fentanyl and was purchased at an "independent convenience store not permitted to sell marijuana. "
