Medical Device Fraud Warning in Ulster County
You can never be too careful when it comes to medical insurance.
It has come to the attention of the Ulster County District Attorneys Division of Consumer Affairs that some people are being targeted in Medical Device Fraud. According to a press release some Ulster residents have received calls or have been contacted through mail to purchase medical devises that are said to be "covered by Medicare, Medicaid or other insurance programs."
The Division of Consumer Affairs has a few suggestions on how to protect yourself from these scams.
They suggest the obvious, of course, such as not answering the phone from a number you do not know as well as hanging up the phone if it's a telemarketer or throwing away the item that has been sent to you in the mail.
A few more suggestions:
- Disregard TV ads offering free back or knee braces.
- Report instances of fraud by calling 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) or visiting www.medicare.gov and clicking on Forms, Help, & Resources.
If you are in need of a back or knee brace always consult your doctor.
