A man wanted by police in Illinois is accused of killing a woman in the Hudson Valley.

On Sunday around 2:40 p.m, City of Newburgh police officers responded to 88 Carson Avenue for an unattended death report.

Arriving officers found 47-year-old Tanya Smith dead on the ground of a second floor bedroom.

City of Newburgh Detectives in conjunction with the Orange County District Attorney’s office began the investigation. As a result of the investigation, 59-year-old Kevin Cook was charged with murder and being a fugitive from justice stemming from an open warrant from the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Cook was staying with a relative in Newburgh, police say. Police didn’t release any information regarding any possible connection between Cook and Smith.
