New York Could Lower Hunting Age to 12
According to the Department of Environmental Conservation, starting at the age of 12 children can start their hunting experience.
Currently, 12-year-olds are allowed to bow hunt with the proper hunting license and in the proper hunting zones.
On Monday, Jan. 22, a bill was passed that could lower the hunting license age. NBC News 10 is reporting that the New York State Senate passed a bill that would lower the hunting age from 14 years old, when they can be licensed to hunt with a firearm, to 12 years old.
Rich Funke, a Republican state senator from the 55th District, introduced the bill that was passed on Monday, stating that many families who partake have a long family hunting tradition. By lowering the age it would make it easier for families to keep the hunting tradition alive while teaching younger members of the family valuable skills.
Hunters are urged to stay in the loop with age requirements and licensing information on the DEC's official website.
