Three kayakers called for help after they became "ice-locked" in the Hudson River on Monday.

The last few days across New York and in the Hudson Valley have felt like what it must feel like to live in the Arctic. We've experienced temperatures below zero in towns like Montgomery, N,Y and single digits in places like Poughkeepsie and Newburgh, NY in the morning and only near 20 degrees in the daytime.

Not exactly the type of weather you would think would be ideal for kayaking on the Hudson River, but that didn't stop three kayakers in Highland, NY Monday from attempting to kayak on the river ending in a call for help to first responders.

Kayakers Get Stuck in Ice on Hudson River

It all started Monday, January 20th at approximately 12:50 p.m. when the three kayakers became "ice-locked" in the Hudson River and had to be assisted in getting out of the water by members of the Highland Fire Department (HFD) according to the Daily Freeman.

HFD Chief Peter Miller told the Freeman that just before 1 p.m. his department was dispatched to assist two males and one female kayaker who called for help on their cell phones from the middle of the Hudson River on a 21-degree day.

Not the Best Day to Kayak

Miller said that the unidentified kayakers began their Hudson River adventure early Monday going upriver from Bob Shepard Highland Landing Park and ran into trouble on their return trip due to the river tide.

Miller said, "They apparently were not aware of the fact that the Hudson River is a tidal river. On their return trip they were met with all of the ice coming in with the tide. So, they got ice-locked out on the river."

Fire Department Assists in Rescue

As members of HFD arrived on the scene to help one of the males had made it to shore and was already out of the river when they arrived, but the other two still needed assistance. Miller said that the other two were eventually able to work their way over to Bob Shepard Park, "The other two worked their way over to Bob Shepard Park and we got them and their kayaks out of the Hudson River and over a damn using ladders."

Miller did say that all three of the kayakers, who were probably 30 to 40 years old, were wearing appropriate gear for the excursion saying, “They had a certain amount of preparation involved in their excursion but it didn’t totally work out the way they thought it would."

Thankfully the kayakers suffered no injuries.
