Millbrook’s Trevor Zoo Revisits Jane Goodall’s Trip Back in The 90s
Jane Goodall, the worlds foremost expert on chimpanzees, has died at the age of 91.
Who Was Jane Goodall?
Jane Goodall was, according to Britannica, an ethologist "known for her exceptionally detailed and long-term research on the chimpanzees of Gombe Stream National Park in Tanzania."
At a young age, Goodall showed interest in animal behaviors and at 18-years-old worked enough until she was able to gain passage to Africa. That's when Goodall began assisting Louis Leakey, a paleontologist and anthropologist which lead to her work in observing chimpanzee behavior at the Gombe Stream Game Reserve.
She wrote books, won awards and was "able to correct a number of misunderstandings about chimpanzees." Most notably, Goodall learned that chimpanzees are omnivorous (not vegetarian), also that they know how to make and use tools and "have a set of hitherto unrecognized complex and highly developed social behaviors."
Her work was recognized and appreciated all over the world. Even here in the Hudson Valley.
