The warmer months in the Hudson Valley tend to be busier. Hudson Valley natives are used to summer construction, delays and roadwork.

Our area is changing and growing which calls for more attention to Hudson Valley roadways. Hudson Valley residents were also shocked to find out that $9.7 million is going towards the New York State Thruway pavement. However, this is something that we can all agree needs attention.

Which Historic Hudson Valley Bridge Is Your Favorite?

The longest suspension bridge in the world was once this Hudson Valley bridge, it is now 99 years old. A popular Hudson Valley bridge goes by not only one or two, but three names, it is also the oldest in our area.

The New York State Department of Transportation shared that this bridge was listed on the National Register in 1980.

An Orange County, NY bridge is known as the Hamilton Fish, named after Hamilton Fish himself.

The Rip Van Winkle Bridge Is Located In Catskill, NY

The Rip Van Winkle Bridge connects two counties, Columbia and Greene County.

According to The New York State Bridge Authority, the Rip Van Winkle Bridge opened in 1935.

"Dedication ceremonies took place on July 2, 1935, in combination with a celebration of the founding of the City of Hudson.  Events included a luncheon, a parade of 50 official cars, and site activities."

 

"The ribbon-cutting was performed by Mrs. Frederick S. Greene on the Greene County side, and Laura Carter Miller on the Columbia County shore.  Approximately 3,000 cars crossed the bridge during the "free hours" that followed and the first toll was collected at 6 P.M. that day."

The Rip Van Winkle Bridge turned 50 in 1985, there was a fireworks display that night, above the historic bridge.

The New York State Bridge Authority shared information about delays on the bridge.

"Rip Van Winkle Bridge: Milling and paving roadwork from Wednesday Sept 20 - Friday Sept 22, 9AM-5PM. Expect delays and alternating lanes."
