If you love to fish, then you have a pretty good idea where to find certain species, or the best time of day to hit your favorite spot. Maybe you've even noticed that you aren't seeing certain species where you used to, or discovered a species you didn't think was in the Hudson Valley. If you've been looking for a place to look this stuff up, here it is.

The New York State Museum has published a new book that, for the first time since 1985, details all 181 native and introduced freshwater fish species in the state of New York. It describes their present, and historical distribution as well as provides an illustration of each species, a brief description of its habitat and native range, and maps.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has announced the publication of "The Atlas of Inland Fishes of New York" as New York State Museum Record Series, Volume 7.

After years of research, several important findings are outlined in the book such as significant changes in distributions of species, the aggressive Green Sunfish can now be found throughout most of the state, and Largemouth bass continue to increase their range across the state, among others.

The book is free to anyone interested. Simply click here to download it from the New York State Museum website. You'll find other titles of interest here as well, also available for free download.
