New York Rangers Rescue and Train on Hudson Valley Ice
It may seem like it has been cold long enough for bodies of water to freeze, but the truth is most are still soft in spots. Heading out on ice over a body of water needs to be well thought out even if you are staying close to shore.
Now that we have had some rain and warmer temperatures ice will start thinning and if moving water is involved that can lead to even more melting. It is a good idea to stay off the ice.
NYS DEC Forest Rangers Rescue Fishman From Ice in Putnam County
Earlier this week there was an ice rescue in Putnam County that involved ice fishing. Forest Ranger Lieutenant Ashida was talking with Anglers about ice thickness at White Pond when they were approached by a person saying that a fisherman had fallen through the ice.

The Ranger ran to the sight with equipment to help. Fortunately, another angler had pulled the victim to safety. The Ranger assisted in getting the 65-year-old Patterson Resident the help he needed to warm up and get checked out by EMS.

Falling through ice is dangerous and requires that you know how to self-rescue. Time matters but it is also important that you don't rush or panic when you first fall in. It is also important if you have planned to be out on ice that you prepare for the possibility of falling through the ice.

Hudson Valley Forest Rangers Train for Ice Rescues in Sullivan County
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation just held training in Sullivan County with Rangers learning flat ice rescue at the Bashakill Wildlife Management Area. Not only did they practice rescue techniques but they also discussed other rescues that might be encountered at other Hudson Valley bodies of water.

In a recent social media post the NYS Dec also shared tips for people who want to ice-fish. The press release gives helpful tips about understanding ice and judging whether or not to go out on it. They also shared info on a free freshwater fishing weekend where they will be waiving the need for a fishing license on those days.
Besides training in Sullivan County this week, Rangers also did a good deed to support the Alzheimer's Association. Forest Rangers O'Connell and Schweider helped at the Polar Plunge to ensure all people participating plunged safely.
