Hudson Valley Supermarket Closing, Laying Off 83 Employees
A popular Hudson Valley supermarket will be closing their doors on February 1.
After the merger of Hannaford and Stop and Shop supermarkets throughout the Hudson Valley last year, a few locations were sold off to other companies like Acme and Tops. Just a year after one supermarket made the change to Tops they've announced that their doors will be shut for good.
The New York State Department of Labor posted an official Worker Adjustment and Training Notification from Tops Supermarket on Route 9 in Wappingers Falls. The document states that the location will be closing on February 1 and will affect all 83 workers currently employed at the store.
The reason for the closing was cited as "economic." and because the entire business will be shut down, there's no indication that anyone else will be moving in to take over the supermarket.
It's unclear what company actually could come in and take over the supermarket. A&P filed for bankruptcy last year, turning over operation of their Hudson Valley locations to Acme and Shop Rite. With the merger of Hannaford and Stop and Shop there are few supermarkets left that would probably be interested in the soon-to-close Wappingers site.
