A total solar eclipse will happen on Monday, April 8th, and select Hudson Valley schools are dismissing early or giving students the day off to view.

Over the last couple of weeks, many of us have begun to get excited as we are preparing for what's being called a "total solar eclipse". The eclipse is expected to pass over the U.S. starting between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. Monday, April 8th and in preparation, numerous Hudson Valley schools have announced they will be closing that day or having an early dismissal.

Solar Eclipse in the Hudson Valley, New York

Earlier this week we shared the path the eclipse is expected to follow starting in Texas and approximately what time it's expected to be visible across the Hudson Valley. We included its path and some of the safety tips that the New York State Police shared to keep us safe during this once-in-a-lifetime event. A total solar eclipse happens when a part of planet Earth is "engulfed in a shadow" cast by the moon which fully blocks all sunlight according to NASA.

It is shaping up to be one of those events we are all going to remember where we were when it happened and because of that numerous Hudson Valley schools have announced that they will either be closed that day or will be running on an early dismissal schedule so students can safely view the solar eclipse.
