Local fire departments will be taking part in a huge recruiting push at the end of April.

Unfortunately, it's no secret that finding volunteers is hard to come by these days. Many of our Hudson Valley fire departments are feeling the effects. Earlier this week, we spoke with Peggy Coons and Dani Seipp of the Milan Volunteer Fire Department, who shared that on April 23rd and April 24th they will be participating in RecruitNY.

According to the RecruitNY website, on April 23 and 24, dedicated fire departments will help make a difference by opening their doors to the public for RecruitNY weekend.

Seipp and Coons tell us that while they may be located in Milan, their coverage area spans through Dutchess and Columbia Counties. They cover 50 square miles and only have 30 active members. Volunteers are needed for a number of positions within the fire department such as:

  • Fire Police (helps with traffic)
  • Support Squad (assists with firefighters at calls)
  • EMS
  • Drivers
  • Pump Ops
  • Exterior Firefighter

Training is available for all positions. If you're interested in becoming a volunteer firefighter, find your local fire department and see what they have lined up for April 23 and 24th.

The Milan Volunteer Fire Department will be holding its open house at two different locations. On Saturday, April 23rd, the open house will be held at Station 2 at 900 Route 199 in Milan from 9 AM to 1 PM. Sunday, April 24th's open house will kick things off at 12 PM and run until 4 PM at Station 1 located at 1575 Jackson Corners Road in Red Hook.

Each open house will have activities like a smokehouse,  safety demonstrations, food, and fun for the whole family.
