Harmful Algal Blooms Are on Their Way, But What Are They?
There's so many good things about warmer weather. Windows down, coats put away, flowers, picnics, outdoor concerts, camping, swimming, and so much more. Apparently though, there are also a few bad things about the weather becoming warmer and one of these are harmful algal blooms, or HABs for short.
I have the same questions you do, what do they look like, where do they form, what are the dangers, and what do I do if encounter some?
According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, HABs are also know as blue-green algae and while most algae are harmless, these particular blooms can make you and your family, even your pets, sick. At times, these smelly blooms of algae can not only impact swimming areas in lakes and ponds, but can also impact drinking water supplies.
They can look like green dots spread across the water or they can appear as long green streaks which might look as if someone has spilled greenish paint into the water. In order to help us all be able to not only identify HABS, but to avoid and report them, the DEC has released a new brochure.
Should you some in contact with these, you'll need to rinse your skin thoroughly, should any other symptoms such as skin or eye irritation, vomiting, breathing difficulties, or any other discomfort after coming in contact with the algae, seek medical attention.
