With Democrats soon to be in control of New York, Gov. Andrew Cuomo is promising quick action on new gun control measures.

Late Wednesday, 12 people were killed when a gunman opened fire at a bar in Californa. College students and a police officer are among the dead. In the wake of the tragedy, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is has vowed to introduce stricter gun laws in the New York.

"In New York, we are not waiting for the federal government to act," Cuomo said in a statement Thursday after the shooting. "We already have the strongest gun safety laws in the nation, and in the upcoming legislative session we will take additional steps to make our laws even stronger to keep our communities safe."

According to Cuomo, some of the survivors of last year's Las Vegas shooting also survived the Californa shooting.

"This is an epidemic," Cuomo tweeted. "In the upcoming legislative session, New York will take additional steps to keep our communities safe. Congress should follow our lead. #GunControlNow"

Once the legislature returns, Democrats will control the state Senate and Assembly. Tuesday's midterm elections was a landmark night for New York Democrats who took control of the New York State Senate for just the third time in 50 years.

"Two days ago, Americans made clear that they want a return to reasonable politics. We are resolved to do all we can to uphold that vision, and to make our streets safe as well," Cuomo said. "These acts of senseless violence are occurring with frightening regularity, and yet Washington has resigned itself to doing nothing. Thoughts and prayers will not prevent another shooting—but action can."

Cuomo wants to make gun safety one of his legacies, according to the New York Post. In January, Cuomo says the Senate and Assembly will focus on strengthening New York's already tough gun laws.

Possible new gun laws could raise the age to purchase a gun from 18 to 21 and extended the waiting period on gun purchases if red flags are raised during a federal background check, Newsday reports.
