Only 5 hours after his son, current Governor Andrew Cuomo, took the oath of office for his second term, Former Governor Mario Cuomo passed away from natural causes in his apartment in Manhattan. He was 82. According to the New York Daily News, he was surrounded by his family.

He was born in Queens and served three terms as the governor of New York. He was known for many things, but to say that he was a powerful speaker is an understatement. In fact, it was the keynote address he delivered in July 1984 at the Democratic National Convention that made him a national figure.

He is survived by his wife Matilda and four other children.
